Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has remarked that the police’s morale has returned in the last six months since the government took office. He stated that all disciplined forces, including the police, are working at full strength to control the law and order situation.
He made these remarks while addressing a prayer and Milad Mahfil, organized on the occasion of the holy Eid-e-Miladunnabi (PBUH), in front of the BNP central office in Nayapaltan, Dhaka, on Wednesday (August 26), as the chief guest.
The Home Minister said that after taking responsibility following the student-mass uprising of 2024, the government had to simultaneously consider public expectations, the rule of law, and the overall law and order situation. The disciplined forces inherited were then in a state of disarray.
He added that the modernization of the police and other disciplined forces, boosting their morale, and encouraging them to work as public servants are all ongoing simultaneously. Since the government took office, there has been no incident where the police failed to arrest those involved and bring them to justice immediately after a crime was committed.
Salahuddin Ahmed stated that at the time of taking office, the morale and working environment of the disciplined forces, including the police, were extremely precarious. That situation has changed in the last six months. The police’s morale has returned, and they are working with full strength to suppress crime.
Referring to the killing of four members of the same family in Rangpur, he mentioned that in that incident too, those involved were brought under the law within a reasonable time after the crime was committed. Whether nationally publicized or not, action is being taken in every criminal incident, and the accused are being handed over to the courts through due legal process.
Commenting, “It would not be right to expect more in such a short time,” the Home Minister added, “Insha’Allah, the Bangladesh Police will be transformed into a public-friendly force that meets the people’s expectations.”
He further stated that changes are also being made to the legal framework for other disciplined forces. Their accountability and transparency are being ensured. Rewards, awards, and certificates are being given for good work, and at the same time, appropriate measures will be taken against criminals.
The Home Minister remarked that revolutionary changes cannot be expected overnight. However, under the leadership and guidance of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the law and order situation will be elevated to such a level that public expectations are met, and law enforcement agencies can establish themselves as public-friendly forces.
He appealed to the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by providing necessary information. He concluded, “Insha’Allah, the government is with the people.”
Highlighting the significance of Eid-e-Miladunnabi, Salahuddin Ahmed said that the life and ideals of the Great Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) are to be followed by everyone. His teachings emphasize peace, forgiveness, patience, equality, tolerance, and the establishment of justice. Ensuring the rights and dignity of all people, regardless of religion or caste, is one of the core lessons of his ideals. He stressed that a peaceful, justice-based, and public welfare-oriented Bangladesh must be built by following these ideals.
BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Joint Secretaries General Khairul Kabir Khokon, Habib Un Nabi Khan Sohel, Abdus Salam Azad, Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, and leaders from various levels of the party were present at the event.
