Six people died in a stampede triggered by panic after a fire broke out at Mymensingh Medical College (Mymec) Hospital. The incident occurred in the hospital’s new building around 6:00 PM on Monday (September 14).
As fire and smoke spread, patients, their relatives, and hospital staff were gripped by fear. Many rushed down the stairs to save their lives, leading to severe pushing, shoving, and a stampede, which resulted in six deaths and several injuries.
Upon receiving the report, 10 units from five fire service stations promptly arrived at the scene and brought the fire under control.
Purna Chandra Mutsuddi, Assistant Director of Mymensingh Fire Service, stated that preliminary investigations suggest the fire originated from an electrical short circuit and excessive heat in the elevator controller machine board. However, the exact cause will be confirmed after a thorough investigation.
Although the fire did not escalate into a large blaze, the extensive spread of smoke across various floors of the building caused intense panic among patients and their relatives.
