Prime Minister’s Information Advisor Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman emphasized the importance of increasing media literacy or media awareness to ensure the safety of the country’s people and prevent misinformation and rumors online.
He made these remarks on Saturday (September 26) at 11 AM during a discussion meeting organized concerning amendments to the proposed Cyber Security Act and the review and proposals of the Bangladesh Journalists’ Council (BJC).
Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman stated that a Cyber Security Act is needed that will ensure the safety of the country’s people. Concurrently, effective initiatives must be taken to prevent the spread of misinformation online. In this regard, it is crucial to raise public awareness about the media.
He mentioned that the proposed Cyber Security Act has not yet been finally passed. Consequently, there is still an opportunity for necessary changes and amendments to the law. The proposed law can be discussed, reviewed, and amended as required.
He also highlighted the necessity of bringing new forms of online journalism and their associated monetization systems under a policy framework. He commented that as the scope and nature of online journalism have evolved in the current era, it is essential to bring these aspects within a clear policy structure.
He further stated that the same legal framework should apply to everyone in cases of spreading rumors, falsehoods, or misinformation. It is necessary to take action under a uniform framework without considering favoritism during law enforcement.
The discussion meeting involved a detailed deliberation on the amendments to the proposed Cyber Security Act, the BJC’s review, and various proposals.
