Uranium-carrying Aircraft for Rooppur En Route to Dhaka, Expected Tonight

A uranium-carrying aircraft for the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant has departed from Russia for Dhaka. The plane is scheduled to arrive at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka around 11:30 PM on Friday.

Science and Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam confirmed this while speaking with media personnel on Friday afternoon.

The minister stated that the aircraft carrying fuel for the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant has already departed from Russia. The plane will reach Dhaka after a stopover in India.

He added that all preparations have been completed to transport the uranium consignment to the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant once the aircraft arrives at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. The uranium consignment will be transported to Rooppur under the security of the Bangladesh Army.

A total of 48 additional uranium assemblies for Rooppur’s first unit and 163 for the second unit are expected to arrive in the country via nine flights between November and December. These uranium consignments will reach Bangladesh from Russia, passing through Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India.

Previously, fuel for the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant arrived in the country in 2023. That fuel was installed in the nuclear reactor in May of this year.
