Yemen’s armed Houthi group has launched missile and drone attacks on three cities in Saudi Arabia, including Taif. These attacks, carried out on Monday (September 14) in Taif, Khamis Mushait, and Abha, injured 13 civilians. Several homes and vehicles were also damaged.
News agency Anadolu reports that the Saudi-led coalition announced details of the Houthi group’s missile and drone attacks early Tuesday (September 15). Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Maliki stated that these attacks targeted the cities of Khamis Mushait, Abha, and Taif on Monday, injuring 13 people. Their injuries were not serious, with some sustaining moderate wounds.
He added that seven homes and two vehicles were also damaged in the attacks. Al-Maliki accused the Houthis of deliberately targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure.
He stated that the coalition would take necessary measures to prevent such attacks in the future, in line with its right to self-defense.
Earlier on Monday, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree claimed that Saudi warplanes had carried out 54 attacks in five Yemeni provinces over the previous 24 hours. Saree stated that F-15 and Typhoon fighter jets were used in these attacks and warned that these attacks “would be responded to.”
Earlier on Monday, the Houthis also claimed to have launched large-scale missile and drone attacks on King Khalid Air Base in Khamis Mushait. Simultaneously, they threatened to expand their operations against Saudi Arabia.
After years of relative calm, conflict between Yemen’s internationally recognized government forces and the Houthis has escalated again since early July.
The war in Yemen has been ongoing since 2014 when the Houthis seized control of the capital Sana’a and several provinces. The conflict intensified in 2015 when the Saudi-led Arab coalition intervened in Yemen to support the internationally recognized government.
