New tensions have emerged between Bangladesh and India following a press conference held by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at a foreign correspondents’ club in India. Following this incident, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Friday that the Indian government had no role in organizing the event. It was an event hosted by a private media organization.
The Bangladeshi government expressed strong indignation over the incident. Dhaka conveyed its dissatisfaction in strong terms regarding how Sheikh Hasina, who is facing allegations of genocide, was given the opportunity to speak publicly. Simultaneously, a warning was issued that this incident could have a negative impact on Bangladesh-India bilateral relations.
However, Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, clearly stated that the Indian government does not agree with the remarks made by Sheikh Hasina at that event. Specifically, the Indian government does not support any statements made against the current government of Bangladesh.
During Friday’s weekly briefing, Jaiswal stated that India would take all necessary steps to ensure its interests and security in light of the regional situation. He also added that India is closely monitoring all activities in neighboring countries and evaluating them from a national security perspective.
He further informed that despite political tensions and diplomatic differences, cooperation between India and Bangladesh in economic and energy sectors continues.
Although India’s statement attempted to clarify the government’s position on Sheikh Hasina’s press conference, the incident has sparked renewed discussions in the recent diplomatic relations between the two countries.
