Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has stated that despite the changing nature of crime, the police have not yet been modernized.
He made this remark on Wednesday (September 16) at the 43rd founding anniversary celebration of the Bangladesh Crime Reporters Association (CRAB).
The Home Minister said that the nature of crime has changed with time. The use of digital technology has also increased in crime prevention. However, the police have not yet been adequately modernized.
He added that modern cyber security labs will be established at police station and Upazila levels. Through this, initiatives are being taken to further enhance the police’s capability to combat cybercrime.
Addressing crime reporters, Salahuddin Ahmed said that their work involves risks. He suggested that work could be done towards providing risk allowances to those who collect and publish crime news at risk.
Referring to the necessity of law amendments, he stated that criminals, despite being arrested under existing laws, are often released on bail. Therefore, initiatives must be taken to amend laws as per necessity.
The Home Minister further added that gambling and drugs play a role in almost every crime committed by the youth. To reduce crime, it is necessary to first research why crimes are being committed. Subsequently, initiatives must be taken to eliminate the causes of crime and reduce their occurrence. Work on this is ongoing.
