Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will not be travelling to New Delhi, the capital of India, to attend India’s upcoming BRICS Summit, said State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir. He made this statement to journalists on Thursday (August 10) outside an international seminar on Rohingya issues at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital.
BNP’s media cell confirmed this information in a press release.
It is known that the 18th BRICS Summit will be held in New Delhi on September 12 and 13. India is the host this year.
Meanwhile, there had been various discussions regarding Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s BRICS visit for the past few days. India had also stated on several occasions that they did not have any new confirmed information regarding the Bangladeshi Prime Minister’s participation.
In this regard, Humayun Kabir stated that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman was invited to BRICS as the Chairman of BIMSTEC, not as the Prime Minister.
The State Minister for Foreign Affairs also mentioned that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman would undertake a bilateral visit to India when the environment is favourable.
He also informed that no representative from Bangladesh would participate in the BRICS summit.
It is known that although Bangladesh is not a member of BRICS, Delhi had invited the Prime Minister to participate in the summit’s outreach session as the current Chairman of BIMSTEC. However, the Prime Minister is ultimately not responding to that invitation.
Finally, the uncertainty surrounding the Prime Minister’s participation in the BRICS summit has been resolved by the State Minister for Foreign Affairs’ statement.
