Following in the footsteps of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to address world leaders at the upcoming session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Abu Abdullah M Saleh confirmed this information to the media at a ‘Meet the Press’ event organized by the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in the capital on Thursday (September 17) afternoon.
He stated that the Bangladeshi Prime Minister’s participation on the world stage is not only significant for the country but also crucial in an international context.
Regarding media freedom, the Press Secretary said that the current government supports full freedom of the press. However, he emphasized that media freedom does not imply ‘arbitrariness’ in any way.
He further added, ‘It is neither the responsibility of the government nor the public to determine the extent of media freedom. The ultimate authority to make decisions on this matter rests solely with the courts.’
Abu Abdullah M Saleh urged media outlets to prevent the spread of misinformation in the age of information technology. He stated that to combat rumors, gossip, and propaganda, every media organization must establish systematic ‘fact-checking’ mechanisms through its own initiative.
He also remarked that there is no alternative to fact-checking to ensure responsible journalism.
Highlighting the country’s economic and administrative situation, the Press Secretary said that the current government is successfully leading the nation forward by overcoming the fragile administrative structure of the past and the ongoing global conflict situation.
He added that by successfully tackling all types of internal and international risks, Bangladesh has now transformed into a safe and stable nation for foreign investment.
