Protecting Democracy is Now the Biggest Responsibility: President

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir commented that protecting democracy is now the country’s biggest task and responsibility.

He made these remarks on Tuesday (September 15) afternoon while speaking as the felicitated guest at a civic reception organized at the Sylhet City Corporation premises.

The President stated that after much sacrifice, tribulation, bloodshed, and the loss of human lives, the opportunity has arisen to remove the fascist government and create a democratic environment in the country. After years of movement and struggle, the opportunity has now emerged to institutionalize democracy.

He said that a government has been formed through elections under the leadership of Tarique Rahman. This government is rapidly working to rebuild the country from its ruins.

Highlighting the responsibilities of both the government and the opposition in safeguarding democracy, the President said that the primary duty of both parties would be to maintain the democratic system and make parliament effective. He added that while differences of opinion may exist on various issues, they can be resolved through discussions.

He further stated that in the past, they had to fight for the establishment of democracy. Now, the major challenges ahead are national reconstruction, further strengthening democracy, and building a habitable country for future generations.

Mirza Fakhrul said that the people of Bangladesh have repeatedly struggled for democracy and have also faced various obstacles. He cautioned everyone to be vigilant so that the current opportunity is not wasted due to negligence.

Regarding various problems in Sylhet, he mentioned that local ministers and Members of Parliament are working on these issues. Initiatives have already been taken to advance several large projects. He expressed hope that these activities would fulfill the long-standing expectations of the people of Sylhet.
