State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir commented that Bangladesh’s participation in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly was fruitful. He stated that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit successfully presented the new government’s commitments and expectations on the global stage, while also creating opportunities for expanding bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
He made these remarks regarding the Prime Minister’s UN visit at a press conference organized at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday (September 28).
The State Minister for Foreign Affairs stated that guests participating in various meetings and bilateral discussions spontaneously expressed support for Bangladesh’s new democratic journey. He further commented that the Prime Minister, elected by the people’s vote after a long time, has elevated Bangladesh’s self-confidence, honor, and self-respect to new heights on the world stage.
Humayun Kabir informed that during the four-day visit, the Prime Minister participated in a total of 30 international programs. This included delivering a speech at the UN General Assembly session and speaking at seven high-level meetings. Additionally, he held bilateral meetings with 11 countries and met with top officials from 10 international organizations, including the United Nations.
He stated that during the session, the Prime Minister met with the Presidents of Turkey and Iran, the Vice President of Maldives, and the Prime Ministers of Bhutan, Pakistan, Thailand, Croatia, and Haiti. Furthermore, a bilateral meeting was held with the Crown Prince of Kuwait.
The State Minister for Foreign Affairs added that the Deputy Prime Ministers and Foreign Ministers of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates also paid courtesy calls on the Prime Minister.
Additionally, the Prime Minister met with the UN Secretary-General, the President of the World Bank Group, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Myanmar. He also had courtesy meetings with the founder of the International Peace Institute, the CEO of the Gates Foundation, the CEO of Boeing Global, and Wall Street investors.
Secretary (Inter-Governmental Organizations Division) M. Forhadul Islam and Additional Foreign Secretary A. K. M. Shahidul Karim of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were present at the press conference.
